To add a "Share via Facebook Messenger" button, Facebook requires a unique App ID registered to your organisation. This is free, takes about 10–15 minutes, and doesn't require any technical knowledge.
Before you start, you'll need:
- A personal Facebook account (to log in with)
- A contact email address to associate with the app (something like a team inbox or your own work email is fine)
Step 1 — Go to the Meta Developer site
Open this address in your browser: https://developers.facebook.
Log in using your personal Facebook account. Don't worry — your personal account is just used to authenticate you. The app itself will represent your organisation, not you personally.
Step 2 — Register as a Meta Developer (first-timers only)
If you've never used the Meta Developer site before, you'll see a "Get Started" button in the top-right corner of the page. Click it, then:
- Accept the Meta Platform Terms when prompted
- Complete any verification steps (this may include confirming your phone number or email)
If you've logged into the Meta Developer site before, skip to Step 3.
Step 3 — Create a new app
Go to: https://developers.facebook.
You'll be asked to enter two things:
- App name: Enter something that makes it clear what the app is for, for example
Quiz - Your Organisation Name - Contact email: Enter your work email address (or a shared team inbox)
Click Next.
Step 4 — Select a use case
You'll be shown a list of use cases. Select "Other" (at or near the bottom of the list), then click Next.
On the next screen asking for an app type, select "Consumer", then click Next.
Step 5 — Confirm and create
You'll see a summary screen. Click "Create App".
Facebook may ask you to re-enter your Facebook password at this point — this is normal. Enter it and confirm.
Your app will be created and you'll be taken to its dashboard.
Step 6 — Add your website domains
Once you're in the app dashboard:
- In the left-hand sidebar, click "Settings", then click "Basic"
- Scroll down to find the field labelled "App Domains"
- Add all the domains and sub-domains you have added to your quizzes in the Embed tab, one at a time, without
wwworhttps. - Scroll further down to the "Website" section. In the "Site URL" field, enter the full website address including
https:// - Click "Save Changes" at the bottom of the page
Step 7 — Find your App ID
Your App ID is shown at the very top of the Settings > Basic page — it's a long number, something like 1234567890123456.
Copy that number.
